Savanna GA and Red Gate RV Resort

We have now arrived in Savannah after months of discussing where we wanted to travel to first.  And it is hot – today at 96!  A record breaking heat wave that will last until this weekend.  Good timing on this leg of the east coast!

The travel here went very smooth, no traffic delays.  I did not like the lack of sturdiness of our bike rack on the back of the camper, too much play, so at a truck stop I removed them from the rack and placed into the bed of the truck.  Solved that issue for the time being.  Not sure what I will do with them, but they are fine in front of the hitch for now.  Bungeed into place.

We left Fort Mill SC at about 9am and arrived here at 2:30pm.  The truck is doing great and I’m gaining some confidence/skill as well.  Our MPG while towing seems to be about 10.5 and 14.5 with just the truck.  About what I expected towing this 16,000 pound load.

Upon arriving and checking in to the campground we noticed 20-30 old classic RV gathered into a circle.  Some looked like an abandoned trailer that you might see in a farm field.  What’s up with that?  The camp host explained that the BBC is setting up a television set to film a series.  A series about what I do not know.  Do they even have these US built RVs in England?  But a crew is busy sawing boards, running cables, and setting up the RVs for something. After they left yesterday, we grabbed a drink and roamed over to have a look.

A Dodge Travco similar to the one my parents had back in the day
now this is a cool airstream
a fixer upper

This brings back memories of summer picnics as a kid (that is some model of GM car, but not sure of the year, maybe 52?)
swings to watch the sunset over the lake
My fishing spot for tonight!

Well, that was the first day here.  After checking in, setting up the RV, dinner, a walk, we stayed in the rig enjoying the dual A/C units.

Enjoy your day.

  1. It looks like a great spot to relax and wet a line. I hope the stress of the spring is beginning to go away.

    1. Yes, a very relaxing park with trails, a working farm, fishing, and a club house. It’s catch and release and stocked with sunfish. The last couple of months that been very intense and tiring, but on to next phase now!

  2. When I was growing up, we owned a 31 ft Airstream. Looked just like the one in your picture above. We’d take 2 – 3 weeks every summer and travel the US, plus some shorter trips here and there. (I probably told you this before). Wonderful memories of wonderful times!!!

    1. Hi Margie! I’m glad that you found the blog. Great to hear from you. Yes, I remember you mentioning the Airstream. Those are some great memories for sure. Thanks for sharing.
