Savannah GA, Walking Tour – Southern Charm

In our first full day at Savannah, we drove the truck into the historic district that was about a 15 minute drive from the campground.  Arriving at 9:00 am to avoid the heat of the day, we began at the visitors center, loading up on maps and information.

The forecast called for a record 96 degrees.  Not sure if it made that mark, but it certainly was warm.  We had a great time exploring the natural beauty and the historical buildings.  This is a beautiful city with elegant architecture, ornate ironwork, fountains and green squares.  The historical part of the city is laid out in squares with amazing parks separating them.  These 22 parks are absolutely awesome in their beauty with massive live oak trees decorated with spanish moss.  They all have some monuments, some have fountains, all have benches to rest.

History

From the city’s website: “Savannah’s recorded history begins in 1733. That’s the year General James Oglethorpe and the 120 passengers of the good ship “Anne” landed on a bluff high along the Savannah River in February. Oglethorpe named the 13th and final American colony “Georgia” after England’s King George II. Savannah became its first city.

The plan was to offer a new start for England’s working poor and to strengthen the colonies by increasing trade. The colony of Georgia was also chartered as a buffer zone for South Carolina, protecting it from the advance of the Spanish in Florida.

Under the original charter, individuals were free to worship as they pleased and rum, lawyers and slavery were forbidden – for a time.”

Here are some photos from the walk:

the visitor’s center – originally was train station from 1800’s
one of the 22 parks with a fountain
Pat at the park
the City Market – about 2 blocks of shops, eating places, coffee shops, etc.
One of the many beautiful churchs
Overlooking the river front area
Along the River Front; about 3 blocks of restaurants, bars, and shops. Quite touristy.
the Talmadge Bridge; 188 feet tall I think
A school’s field day it appears
the Georgia Queen; a lunch and dinner cruiser
stone streets; near the river front you will find many streets and building made of cobblestone. This was ship’s ballast that was off-loaded in Savannah as they picked up cotton
a stop at the Shrimp Factory to try some local brews; a Belgian Wit and an IPA
Pat at the bar with Julia, our most informative bartender
St John the Baptist Catholic Cathedral; an amazing house of worship
another of St Johns on panoramic from iphone

That’s it for today.  Another touring day tomorrow as we booked the hop on hop off tour buses.  On Saturday, we will stay put at the campground trying to book some upcoming camp reservations.  Many are booked up, so we will keeping looking up other towns north of Charleston to find an opening.  Maybe we try Walmart…

Have a good day
