Our First Trip, Fort Mill, SC, KOA Kampground

Our first major drive is now under our belts!  We traveled from our former home town of Christiansburg, VA to a small town just south of Charlotte, NC.  The town of Fort Mill has a KOA campground just a mile off the interstate I-77.  Very convenient is what we were looking for to minimize the in town driving with this beast of a trailer.

The driving process went very well, but we ran into several road delays and what should have been a 4 hour drive turned into 6.5 long hours.  Our re-positioning days target time on the road is 3-4 hours.  We plan to move about once per week to a new location, so the 4 hours moving per week is not bad at all.

During the year long planning time for this new RV adventure, we weighed the pros/cons of motorhome with a small towed car compared to the big truck and 5th wheel trailer.  Now after some road time and stationary time we can rate the difference a little better.  When on the road moving the 5th wheel, I would rate the comfort level at a 4 out of 10 with 10 being best case.  We can get into the trailer to eat lunch and use the bathroom at stops, but no A/C and not much room at all due to the slides are fully in.  Whereas in the motorhome, comfort going down the road is very good.  Especially the air ride of a diesel pusher, full access, and A/C on the warm days.

The advantage is that while set up at campground, the 5th wheel camper (40 foot model), is absolutely great.  A 9 out of 10 might be appropriate.  Having a king size bed, large living area and kitchen, decent sized bathroom, and tons of storage make it very comfortable.  We just have to remember where everything is stored!  It will all come in time.  We will post a photo tour of the camper soon.  Maybe video if I can figure out how to post that.

Back to our location, Fort Mill, SC.  This was just a quick stop for a day and 2 nights as we are on the way to Savannah.  The town of Fort Mill has much southern history being established in 1873, taking its name from a colonial era fort built by the British and a local grist mill on Steele Creek.  It also has a rich civil war history as the last meeting of the Confederate Congress with Jefferson Davis.  And to their credit, they have not removed the statues as many towns have unfortunately done.
