Winter Season Winding Down

The winter season at our Llano Grande RV Resort (LINK) is starting to wind down into its summer phase. We are watching several rigs depart every day as they begin the journey back Up North. Most residents are still here in our section of the park, but everyone is busy making preparations to leave. Most will be leaving from mid-March to the first week of April.

This RV park usually has over 50 activities going on any given day. It is quite incredible. That is also slowly winding down to very few things happening over the summer. Most of the activity groups are planning a banquet or party to get all the participants together for one last time.

The RV park has a Resident Appreciation Day with free hot dogs and beer plus “$300” of chips to play the “casino” games. Pat is giving the roulette a big whirl!

For some reason, it will be kind of sad to see most of the Winter Texans leave and the park become an empty skeleton of an RV park. For sure, there will be still a hundred or so people who stay here year round, but compared to the 2,000 or more here during the peak, it will look like a ghost town.

And they held another donkey race based on the roll of the dice. This popular event includes betting quarters on one of six donkeys to win with payout odds calculated just like the big leagues.

But that is the annual cycle for places like this. Over the summer, when the place is empty, they perform much of the maintenance and planned upgrades.

This week was the final park concert with both Tom Jones and Elvis making appearances!

As our RV park concludes its season, we will just be beginning our 2019 travel season. This is where we will have a very active spring, summer, and fall traveling to 48 new and exciting destinations. We will also pick up five new states for us. New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The other ten states traveled this year will be repeats, but enjoyed as well.

Line dancing is very popular and they have lessons every week.

The three month winter downtime has been a great break for us. Many new friends and lots of new activities. But, it is time to move on. Just like my career with my employer in accounting. It was good over the years (mostly – ha!), but after 44 years, it was time for another phase in my life. Eras end and change is inevitable.

We’ve eaten at Nanas a couple of times. Very nice authentic Mexican food.

Someone recently said that this time in life (retirement) is the middle phase. The first phase is everything you do up until retiring to save and prepare for the future. The middle phase needs to be focused on the important things in life and every day made to count. You can’t take any time for granted. We just do not know how much time we have until we reach that final phase.

While we are both still very healthy, we plan to continue our travels around the US. Seeking out the hidden gems and trying to capture the moment here in this blog. How many more years? I’m really not sure. We started this RV journey with three years in mind. We are thinking of some longer period of time now that we are closing in on two years on the road. God willing.

We have about two weeks remaining before we leave and join the caravan heading for places Up North. Already have begun the preparations to be on the road again. Much to do. Take care and God Bless.
