Myrtle Beach SC & Savannah GA

Being on the road is all coming back again as if we never had an interruption! While having the home base is great, I have missed the excitement of travel and exploring new places. Even with Covid, it is great to be back in the RV and on the road. Our 2nd and 3rd stops were at Myrtle Beach and Savannah. Here is a quick recap…

Myrtle Beach, SC

We had a couple of minor RV repair items to be serviced at our usual shop near Myrtle, but they were completely scheduled out to March. Oh well, they can certainly wait. It seems the Covid issues have driven the RV market crazy with many new first time buyers. And with more RVs on the road there is more to repair.

Our RV resort was the Willow Tree RV Resort in Longs, SC. One of the nicest that we have stayed. We really did not do much at all here but relax, read, and go for long walks around their lake. I read the Grisham book, “Camino Island.” It was a completely different kind of Grisham book. I thought it was a fun read but maybe not great. Pat is reading a Kristin Hannah book. Anyway, we are really ready for some downtime to relax after a few months of new house painting and fix up.

It rained one entire day in which we did nothing and one early evening we actually went out to eat at Calabash NC to Ella’s seafood. My plan was to skip lunch and go extra early like at 3 or 4 pm. We arrived and decided to go for a walk first at the local water’s edge park. Trying to miss any potential Covid crowds by getting there early.

Then it was a very good seafood dinner at Ella’s. Nothing too fancy. The booth’s were every other one closed, so it felt quite Covid safe. Plus it was only a small crowd. I had the tasty fried oysters and Pat had the Tuna steak. Both delicious! Our last time to Ella’s was with Bob and Lois, our New York friends.

Savannah, GA – Creekfire RV Resort

Our third hop was to our favorite city, Savannah Ga. This four night stay was very pleasant, but the temperatures plummeted getting down to 26 at night for three nights in a row! That’s crazy for this area, but I saw that a major front came across the US. The daytime highs started out in the mid forties but steadily increased to 60 on our final day.

Cold temps do pose some issues for people traveling in an RV. They are just not made with much insulation. Even though their literature may say four seasons ready and other buzz words, it’s all a pack of marketing lies. Ours does a good job down to about 40 degrees with the electric fireplace and using the propane furnace that will run as needed.

But down to the mid 20’s at night, the furnace needs to run almost continuously to maintain a comfortable 68 degrees. And we go through a 7 gallon bottle of propane in two days. A full bottle usually averages about 22 bucks. Doing some quick math you can see that a full month of mid-20’s at night would end up costing about $341 for the propane and not including any electricity. Not too efficient. My thoughts on winter camping are to go south until you find the 70-80’s during the daytime!

Understand that I knew the cold weather issues before we bought the fifth wheel coach as we have had a few pull behind trailers in the past. In the future winters, we’ll try to leave Virginia earlier to be at our southern destination by December 1st.

Anniversary Dinner

For our 48th anniversary, we decided to go out and eat in at one of the best places in town (IMHO). The 17hundred90 is an inn and a restaurant with some exceptional food. The service is good, but quite slow. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours. But, who is in a hurry? We are completely retired with no hard timetable. Plus, we splurged with appetizer and a dessert. Pat had the filet while I had the grouper fish special of the day. Wonderful way to spend a day with my best friend of 48 years.

We may not have dinner out anymore to limit the Covid exposure. Maybe a to-go order here and there, but mostly good home cooked meals. I will be getting the vaccine when it is available to me in the “senior” crowd. Hopefully, I’ll get it in the next couple of months while we frolic away in Florida. Will things go back to normal then?

Photos from our first walk around the Savannah historic district. We love the buildings.

Thanks for following along! Take care and God Bless.
