Final Days as Full-Timers

Final Days as Full-Timers – Our incredible last three years as full-time RVers is quickly coming to an end! We are now in the few final days to obtain possession of our home in Radford, Virginia. At some point, I will need to write a post about the highlights of our travels. That post will be very difficult since we have seen so much. Kind of like determining your favorite kid. Anyway, that is for another day.

It’s Almost Possession Day!

I’m right between Yipee! and Yikes! on this one. We are very excited about getting into the house on Sept 1st (in 5 days). A large home with tons of space and many hobbies just waiting to be enjoyed. On the other hand comes all the planned updating projects along with yard care that tags along with home ownership.

The home has been well maintained through time, but just has not been updated in about 30 years. So, we have many planned updates to bring it up from the 70/80’s. We plan to move slowly by replacing some flooring and paint in the first couple of months. Then, we get into the more extensive plans for the kitchen and bathrooms.

Utility Setup

This is similar to going to the DMV. Since we gain possession this next Monday, I have been calling the utility companies to arrange an orderly transfer. The natural gas and internet are complete, but still waiting for the Radford electric/water/sewer. It has been three weeks and they say they are very busy due to Covid, but they will get it done. Okay, not worrying yet. Five more days…

Due to Covid, the town buildings are all closed to the public. Everything is done by phone calls and email with very slow responses. The electric/water/sewer is run by the city government. Contrast that with the natural gas is a private company and they set up my new account in about 5 minutes.

A good case study for the efficiency of big government.

Radford Library

Pat will love having a local library to borrow books. I also like reading a real book, but have gotten used to the electronic Kindle type of books. They are nice for several reasons including the ability to easily adjust the font size.

Due to Covid, they only let 1 person into the library at a time for 30 minutes and with an advance appointment. They also take phone orders and provide curbside pickup. Times have changed.

Furniture Shopping

We wanted to buy some new furniture and some used. The new pieces for living room and bedroom. We have gone to most all the local furniture stores and have seen a wide variety of quality. Some of the best bedroom sets are from the Amish in Ohio. And they have a long lead time of 3-4 months now.

This furniture should last a long time as the kids are all grown now. This may be the last major furniture that we ever purchase. We got rid of most of our furniture from our last home. Gave it away or sold locally. It was worn out and old.

Radford & the Communist China Virus

We continue to be very cautious, but have been out a few times recently. Maybe after this news we will stay home more. The number of cases have exploded after the local Radford University students have returned. Hopefully, just the result from testing the students. The deaths are still at zero for our new town of Radford.

Hurricane Laura

The projections do not look good for this Cat 4 storm. As I type this the storm is at 150 mph and will land between Texas and Louisiana. Let’s hope and pray those areas are evacuated or else well prepared.

Our section of Virginia is also on the path as it crosses the country. I heard a 4-5 inches of rain on Saturday with some wind. We also got hit by a hurricane Florence remnant in 2018 about this time of year. Same RV park too.

Wrap Up

We have been attending our local home church via live streaming. Although, many members are back in attendance. Some wearing masks, other not. One of my RV park neighbors stopped by to say that he just purchased some local land and will be building a home on it. He is also a new member of our church, the Draper Valley Presbyterian. Small world. Not sure when we will be back physically in attendance. It certainly is not the same with remote service.

The weather has been great mostly in the upper 70’s with many afternoon rains. We have been somewhat busy, but I think it is the calm before the storm. Once we have the house, there is a long list. It will be fun though. Many home improvement projects, but the good news is not having to worry about going to work during the day anymore. I’m very good with that!

Thanks for following along! Take care and God Bless.

  1. Hi Randy & Pat, we always suspected you would end up back in the Christiansburg area, it is one of the most beautiful areas of the country we’ve visited, plus we know you have family in the area. Perhaps we’ll get a chance to see you when your travels bring you up to the Hoosier state, or when we’re passing though your area in our way to Hilton Head. Take care and stay safe!
