Two Days in Waco Texas

We usually like to stay a week in each area to fully explore, have a couple of down days, and to take advantage of the weekly rates.  Unfortunately, our time schedule would only allow two days in Waco, so we had to use our time wisely, but I’m sure we missed a few things.

Relocation

The drive through the Dallas Metroplex had me a bit spooked since our arrival eight days earlier was less than stellar.  But with some experience driving the roads over the week and with Robert’s directions, it was smooth sailing.  It helped that it was a Saturday morning after Thanksgiving.

At only 128 miles, it was easy enough to leave at 10am and arrive by 12:30.  Just in time for lunch after a quick set up.  Our RV park is the I-35 RV Park & Resort.  A few amenities including fast Wifi and a free made to order breakfast every morning!

Texas Ranger Museum

This was the highlight for me.  Of course, everyone has heard of the Texas Rangers, the elite law enforcement unit stationed in Texas.  From the TV show Walker to the Lone Ranger.  We certainly learned the history of the organization.  The good and bad.  And the many heros.

A few things that stood out for me:

  • The Texas Rangers were created in 1823 by Stephen Austin (known as the father of Texas) primarily to protect the border with Mexico.  How about that?
  • They stopped an assassination attempt on president Taft
  • Took down criminals Bonnie and Clyde
  • Participated in Native American skirmishes until 1846
  • Ranger Captain William “Bill” McDonald, who was sent to Dallas in 1896 to stop a riot, said the famous line when questioned about why he was alone: “there is only one riot, so they send only one Ranger”
  • They have had some ruthless incidents in their history, earning them a reputation as tough, renegade bunch
  • There are displays for many of the retired rangers that include a write up, their badge, and their firearm
  • There were many firearms on display.  The most were the 1911 model and some were heavily engraved.  Lots of bling!

No, we did not meet them.  Pat had wanted to see their place and I had heard of them, but really had not watched their show and did not know what they were doing.

Magnolia Market

Wow!  They have converted an old farm with massive silos and barns into a home decorating market complete with an outside food court and play areas.  All very well done and well attended on the Thursday afternoon that we stopped in.

Magnolia Market
They had several of these food trucks set up on a permanent basis.

Only bought some carmel corn and took some pictures.  They have created quite the marketing empire!

The line to get in the bakery for a muffin.  Nope.

They have a nursery selling plants.

Twisted Root restaurant. Good burgers and beer.  Thanks to John and Cindy for the recommendation.

We are now in Austin Texas and will move to San Antonio tomorrow for a week, then Corpus Christi for a week, then we fully migrate south to our winter home in Mercedes Texas.

Take care and God Bless.

  1. Lots to see in The Great State of Texas. We need to get down and see the Texas Rangers museum since it’s only a couple hours away. Hope you enjoy San Antonio as it’s one of my favorite places to visit in Texas.

    Remember the Alamo!
