Travel to Myrtle Beach & a Micro Brewery

On Tuesday, May 30th was our travel day to Myrtle Beach SC.  It was about a 3 hour drive on google maps, but with traffic turned into a 4 hour task.  The drive went fine but with a few tense moments as we navigated the MB city streets packed with cars.  Our MPG was 10.6 while towing.  It was good to arrive at our destination for the next 6 days.

Our current campground is the Myrtle Beach KOA.  This is a very nice facility and only 2 blocks from the beach.  While the daily rate is a bit of a splurge on our budget at $79 per night, having access to the town and walks along the beach are definitely worth it.  They actually have more expensive sites with built in lounge chairs, grills, tables, etc.  Our last campground was a good value spending much below budget, so it all will even out if we are careful.

The campground has a nightly concert at the river, two swimming pools, game room, laundry and many things to keep kids occupied.  The sites are spread out and are nicely wooded and shaded.  In fact our site has so many trees that we cannot put the awning out.  Sacrifices.  We did have to maneuver the 5th wheel around to extend the slides out.  They extend about 3 feet from the camper opening up much more living space, but you have to be mindful of fixed objects outdoors.

After we were set up in the campground we just went for a few walks exploring the camp and the town.  They have a beautiful, wide beach with very fine sand.  Many high rise hotels along the beach front.  A real contrast to Kiawah Island just south of here.

On Wednesday, the morning was a walk along the beach and then down the main drag awhile.  Lots of t-shirt/beach shops, restaurants and bars.  Later in the afternoon we visited a local micro brewery just about 7 minutes away called New South Brewing.  They are located in a very rough warehouse district and upon arriving Pat was not too sure.  Inside it was quite nice.  No tour available today but we tried some of their beers.  Very tasty.  A nut brown ale, red ale, and java the nut ale.  The tasting room is only open a few days a week from 4:30 to 7:00.  They began operations in 1998, well before the current craft beer boom.

the brewery looked sketchy from the road, but was a treat inside.  They used to be a draft beer only production, but have recently expanded to canning as well.

We also enjoyed a lively game of Rummikub back at the camp

Enjoy your day.

  1. Sounds like a good transition to MB and some good experiences there. It’s nice to be so close to the beach, that’s for sure! Enjoy!
