It has been a crazy long break since my last blog post! That last one was a wrap up of the Italy trip. Two months ago! I had not intended to take a long break, but it has been a good but busy summer, with many projects and activities. We have been quite occupied with home ownership projects, family, hobbies, and life in general. In this update, I will look back on a quick recap of the Summer of ’23 and then what’s ahead!
Italy Tour – Capri Island
This is the last stop on our 11 day tour of Italy. I’m trying to capture what we saw and some of my thoughts on each area in this blog. For other travelers and to review myself over the years. Capri Island is just an hour by boat off the coast of Sorrento Italy. It was another up early, catch a bus, then a boat to the island, then a boat tour around the island. It was spectacular!
Italy Tour – Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast
The final stop on our 11-day tour of the highlights of Italy was in the city of Sorrento. It was to be our home base for the next three nights as we explored the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento is located on the southeast coast line of the country. The coastal roads are some of the narrowest and twisty in the world!

Italy Tour – Pompeii
This post is a continuation of our 11-day Italy tour and now we are down to our last 3-day stop in Sorrento in the south of the country. But before arriving in Sorrento, we stopped at the historic archaeological site of Pompeii. The city buried by a volcano in 79AD.
Italy Tour – The Vatican
This post will continue on with our 11-day Italy tour with the SmarTours company. In today’s update I will cover the short trip from our Rome hotel to the Vatican City and our tour through the courtyards and buildings. Want to see what it looks like in this Catholic shrine? Was the Pope at the meet and greet? Read on and of course there are a few photos!
Italy Trip – Rome Day 3
This post will continue on with our 11-day Italy tour with the SmarTours company. Today, I will cover more of Rome in our walking tour of Rome, the Forum, the Coliseum, and finally a foodie walking tour in the evening. Rome is a very walkable city and we walked 6.4 miles on this day!
Italy Tour – Assisi and Rome (Rome day 1-2)
This is a continuation of my posts from our 11-day tour of Italy. In this post we board the bus and travel to Rome, but stop first at Assisi to walk the small town and see the Basilica of St. Francis then on to Rome for three nights. I will cover Rome in a couple of posts because there was so much to see and I took quite a few photos. Imagine that!

Italy Tour – Pisa & Florence
Today’s post will focus on our next stop on the 11-day tour: Pisa (leaning tower and Square of Miracles) and then Florence; the Birthplace of the Renaissance. Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region and home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto. The Galleria dell’Accademia displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. The Uffizi Gallery exhibits Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.”
Italy Tour – Travel Days & Venice
This is the second part of the Italy trip blog. Pat and my anniversary trip finally took place during two weeks in mid May. After a long two travel days we finally arrived to our first destination of the tour: Venice Italy, the city made up of 118 small islands and photo opportunities abound.
Best of Italy Tour
We have had this trip planned since June 2021 as a 50th wedding celebration for Pat and I. It was to have been in May 2022, but was delayed due to lingering Covid issues in Italy. But, we finally made it this year in May 2023! Joining us were Pat’s brother Mike and his wife Lorna who were also celebrating their 50th a year before ours. So, after all the waiting, planning, and trip preparations, we were finally off!
