Mystic Connecticut & Maritime Museum

We decided to work in this day trip as we were nearing the end of our week in Connecticut.  It was just less than an hour to this very busy tourist town and then a few more minutes to find a parking spot for the big truck.  The Mystic historic downtown and the Maritime Museum were a nice day outing.

Maritime Museum

This museum (LINK) was very well done with many interactive displays, short videos, a complete 1800’s seaport village, and many boat displays.  Although a little pricey at $29 each, we spent about 5-6 hours exploring.  Thanks to Orville Sluss for the heads up about this museum.

The seaport village includes everything from a firehouse to a one room school house and many people in costumes to help explain their exhibit.

The exhibit buildings include a very thorough Vikings study of their impact on North America, an excellent history of the whaling industry, ship building, the Mayflower II being rebuilt, and the Charles W. Morgan sailing ship.

The Morgan ship (LINK) was one of the highlights for me.  This is a restored 1841 whaleship that has a 110 foot mainmast.  It has recently sailed up and down the east coast.  We toured through most all of this ship afloat.

They had a 1965 display right down to magazines on the coffee table. We could remember the 60’s.

Mystic CT

Mystic is a beautiful small town with a historic downtown with many shops and restaurants.  More on the touristy side.  We looked through a few shops and galleries and then found a nice place for dinner.

A nice way to spend a day and increase our knowledge of a seaport village.  We have now moved south from CT to the Harrisburg, PA area and have had another stressful repair.  I’ll share more of that in another post.

Take care and God Bless.

  1. Looks like another great place to visit. It must take a enormous amount of time to study about the area to come up with the places to see.

Safe travels on your next reset.

    1. The planning of what to see is not too bad. We start with Trip Advisor and then talk with locals to get ideas. Sometimes, we have picked the campground in an area that we already have plans like the ARRL trip. It is all part of the “process” I guess.

  2. Did you ever see the movie “Mystic Pizza”? Julia Roberts was the main character she was really young so it’s an old movie. You should eat at Mystic Pizza.
