Key West Birthday – Day 2

In my prior post, we loaded a large group of 100 people at our RV park into large buses and took off for a three day trip to the Everglades and Key West. The 463 mile trip was divided over the three days. They were long days on the buses, but we did enjoy the stops and of course Key West.

Day 2

On the second day we had loaded by 8am, the and then caravanned the remaining four hours to the Old Town section of Key West. Again, my legs and back were aching upon arrival at the famous city of Hemmingway. It was good to get out and stretch. And it was lunch time.

The manatees also showed up to greet us at the old town harbor.

We had a great birthday lunch at the Boat House at Turtle Kraals. Pat and I both had the yellowtail tuna dinner. And excellent lunch. Then we simply got a cup of coffee from the Cuban Queen, key lime pie from Kermits, and walked around the town looking at the beautiful old homes, the tourist areas, sunset at Mallory Square, and then back on board by a 7pm departure.

We ran into many others from our group over the course of the day. This is the high season for Key West and the tourists were out in numbers. All of the popular tourists spots were filled to capacity. We stopped in a few, like Sloppy Joes, but it was a crowded standing room only.

Many random photos below are from our walking around. We certainly did walk during the day chalking up 7.3 miles. Pat has done a great job rehabbing her knee. Going from barely able to walk much at all to an easy 7.3 miler. Of course, no hills in Florida. We’ll test that knee when returning to our Blue Ridge Mountain home.

The birthday was very nice. Perfect warm weather, a great lunch, beautiful location, and my sweet wife to share it with. This is a total of 69 rotations around the sun. I’m very fortunate health-wise and never take that for granted. Will have to see what the next decade of the 70’s brings. More travel in both the RV, rail, and air travel we have planned. But, probably not another long bus ride!

Sunset at Mallory Square

To see the sunset from Mallory Square is a tradition when in Key West. You have a large area to view the west as the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico. Also on the square are a bunch of performers to entertain the masses while waiting on the sun. Plus many kiosks selling food, drinks, and crafts.

Wrap Up

This wraps up part 2. In the next update will be the long trip home and a stop in the Everglades to ride an airboat and play with the gators. Take care and God Bless.
