Fort Chiswell, Week #2

The featured image was taken at our DVPC church at sunset.  We are staying at the Fort Chiswell RV Park, near our former home town of Christiansburg, VA for a month before getting back on the road.  There are dentist appointments, RV work, a complete sort through all of our stuff, a new car to buy, family and friends to see, and a wedding to attend.  We have accomplished much at about the halfway point, but still more to do!

It was the same way back in May when we stopped here for two weeks.  Only this time we may not be back for a year as we have a huge next spring and summer planned out west.

Dentist

The dentist work includes the routine cleanings and a crown and filling.  Not exactly a bunch of fun, but need to get it done.  I actually toyed with the idea of waiting until we were in Texas for the dental work.  Just across the border in Mexico the dentist fees are amazingly low.  I was researching it until Trish got wind of it.  I still think it would be a great idea.

RV Work

The RV work is about done with the new fridge installed and a small water leak fixed.  I need to brace up the front closet hanger rod.  Bouncing down the road has worked it loose.  I also plan to wash and wax the RV.  All 40 feet, if time allows.  If not there are always the South Texas work crews I guess.

I had the truck detailed.  Several months of crud build up.

Sorting Stuff

This is the first time since we went on the road a year and a half ago that we are sorting through everything.  From end to end.  If we have not used it yet, get rid of it.

When we left on our Journey, we had no idea what was needed or what we would use.  So we brought too much stuff.

We are now about 75% through the sort process.  Every drawer, cabinet, cupboard, storage bin, basement storage, etc.  We should be much more organized and lighter weight.  I need to have the rig weighed at some point.  It has a 16,000 pound capacity and I assumed we are right at it.  Or maybe over.

New Car

Pat’s 2004 Ford Explorer finally progressed to the point where I felt it was unsafe for any long trip.  So, at 131,000 miles, we added new brakes, brake lines, new battery, and a good wash and wax.  Just to sell it.  Hopefully, will get a little beer money out of it.

The new car search is down to a Ford Escape or else a Honda CRV.  There are pros and cons to each.  We have test driven them and I’ve read several auto reviews on them.  About ready to part with a chunk of cash to help the local economy some more.  The stock market has done well, so we can thank the pres for the car I guess.

Family and Friends

We have enjoyed many visits so far with our son Ross and daughter Audrey.  Also a few visits with good friends Tammy and Quinton.  On Friday, we were invited to Laura and Ted’s for dinner and Janet Poth was also there!  Had a great conversation and wonderful dinner.

Laura’s wonderful chicken creation!

It has also been very nice to attend our home church twice and hear Pastor Bob preach the Word.  There are many good folks at the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church, an PCA church.  Nice to see them again on our quick stop in SW Virginia.

We are also going to try to visit our moms in Indiana for a couple of days.  It is  500 miles from here and we will be going south after leaving this location.  So, it will be even farther to travel at that time.

Bryan’s Wedding

Our son Bryan’s wedding to Jennifer is Oct. 6th in Washington DC.  We are all excited about this big event for the family.  He is our oldest and lives in the city of DC in a remodeled row house.  It is walkable to Union Station.

It will also be great to see some other family over this long weekend.

Well, that’s it.  A busy month and then I’m back on vacation/retirement again as we head southwest with many exciting destinations planned.

Take care and God Bless.

  1. Great idea on weeding out things every year. We’re slowing doing that now but it’s going to be months before we get through it all. Congratulations on the wedding!
