Destin FL: the Halfway Point in Our Month Long Stay

We are truly enjoying the month long stay in Destin!  I continue to get up early each morning around 5:30 am and watch some local and FOX news while drinking a couple of cups of coffee.  Then I read some online news and a few blogs that I follow.  Then breakfast and go outside to read some of my current Michael Connelly book.  About 7:00 am is when Pat gets up and by then I have my long arduous task list updated for the day.  I’m not sure how I ever made it while still working!

For example, today’s list included checking the RV batteries, selecting a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner, a coffee shop trip after lunch, then a trip to Bass Pro Shop.  We stopped for groceries at the local Winn Dixie on the way home.  Then it was burgers on the grill with some mixed veggies and a glass of wine.  A full day indeed!

I selected Ruth Chris’ for our turkey day meal after cross checking a published list of places hosting the holiday meal to their Foursquare ratings.  I almost reverted back to an excel worksheet, but fought the urge.

We are having a cool spell in the panhandle of low 50’s at night and then warming up to low 70’s during the days.  Very clear, blue skies, with bright pink and orange sunsets.  I’m not complaining, but would like it a little warmer.

We are still either walking on the beach or else the walking/bike path along scenic 98.  Averaging about 2-3 miles per day.  Down somewhat from our prior locations.

I bought a couple of cheap beach chairs and an umbrella that we walk over the two blocks to the beach.  We have done this both at midday and then also at 4:30 pm to see the sunsets.  That is so nice to just sit there at the water’s edge and watch the surf lap up to your feet.  Very peaceful.

I marvel at the south facing beachfront along this coast.  You can see the sun rise and set over the gulf at this time of year.  I had never thought of this before, as we usually are on the east, Atlantic coast of Florida and only see the sunrise.

On Tuesday afternoon, we booked the sunset dolphin cruise.  This is a 2 hour cruise aboard an 80 foot custom made boat to watch the dolphins.  It began at 3:00 pm and was back at the dock just after 5.

Since the boat was not very crowded, we could easily see many dolphins either playing in the boat’s wake or else in a large group just a few feet beside the boat.  They are some amazing and smart aquatic mammals!  According to the boat captain, they are ranked just below humans in intelligence and higher than chimps.  I’ve known a few people who actually might be out ranked by these fish.

I would recommend the Southern Star dolphin cruise when in the Destin area.  The senior rates were $25 per person and the boat captain ensures that everyone sees the dolphin.

Since we have finished all of the episodes of Stranger Things and are waiting for the Netflix release of the final season of Longmire, we are searching for another decent series to really get into.  Have tried several with some mixed results.  Any suggestions for must see viewing?

Take care and God Bless.

I ordered some business cards to give to new friends we meet at campgrounds. This photo will be on the card.
Our location is just a few miles from Eglin Air Force base, so we have almost continual flyovers by military jets. It’s pretty cool watching them.  I need to look up these swept wing birds to see what they are  They have a twin tail vertical stabilizers.  Anyone know?

Our boat the Southern Star.  Some good values evident.

The little coffee shop has some great Hawaiian Kona coffee.
