Cadillac Mountain; Acadia NP

We were very fortunate to be on the mountain on a mostly clear day.  We overheard a biker say that he had been up here everyday for a week and this was the first clear day.  So, we counted our blessings, grabbed the cell phone and binoculars, and took the hike around the very top of Cadillac Mountain!

This mountain is at the top of everyone’s must see features while visiting Acadia National Park.  It is the highest point at 1530 feet on the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place that a sunrise may be observed.

I’ve heard that it is very popular to drive up to the top to watch the sunrise.  You need to get up at 3am and arrive by 4am to really to the full affect.  A lady at our campground said that you first see a thin red line on the horizon. Unfortunately, I still have not been motivated enough to plan that early of a morning.

The mountain was named by a French explorer from its early years under French control.  From 1534 through 1763, a substantial part of the North American continent was colonized and under the control of France.  Kind of hard to believe, but there you have it.

Cadillac mountain was shaped by geological forces and over the years the softer rock has worn away leaving the solid granite now exposed.  Huge chunks of flat granite that have smoothed off edges by ancient glaciers and erosion.

It also used to have a railroad to take visitors up to the summit where they could stay in a hotel.  Today, there is only a gift shop at the summit.  And there is a great panoramic view of almost 360 degrees.  It is incredible to view the Lord’s creation and splendor.

You are looking down over the village of Bar Harbor, the Schoodic Peninsula, and many other small villages.  We took the 1/2 mile trail around the top of the mountain.  The pictures obviously do not provide the incredible sense of being there, but I hope that you enjoy!

Me at the summit!  Kind of felt like a Rocky moment standing on the edge of 1,530 feet summit.

Happy Monday from Bar Harbor Maine!  We are wrapping up our stay by working another 4-5 things into our schedule this week.  So much to do!  We leave this Friday for the slow commute back south.

Take care and God Bless.
