Air Force Armament Museum, Eglin Air Force Base

The Air Force Armament museum visit was much more than I had ever imagined.  It was the proverbial bomb!  Located about 35 minutes north of here and it had a free admission to boot.  Our tour lasted about 4 hours as we also packed a picnic lunch to eat in the shadow of a massive B-52 bomber.

If you can imagine a display on every single different type of ordinance that has been developed for the Air Force.  From the Wright Bros to the current GPS or laser guided missiles.  Plus many of the bomber planes ever developed!

Every day we see flyovers by military aircraft of many different types from the nearby Eglin AFB.  We love to see the military planes like a couple of weeks ago at the Pensacola air show.  I learned that most of the Air Force’s development and training is performed at Eglin.  It is the largest AFB and performs testing for all the new missiles and bombs.

One day at the local Ace Hardware store I could hear the loud whine of a military jet.  I was outside in the parking lot and I think it was a Hercules C-130 military cargo plane that had just taken off and making a low pass over the Destin area.  It filled the entire sky as it banked over us.

Back to the museum.  Many displays on two floors inside and all the bomber planes outside.  They discussed the development of the Air Force from 1907 through each war or “conflict” over the years.

One WW-II display in particular was very interesting about Jimmy Doolittle who led a carrier-based B-25 bomber attack against Tokyo Japan in April of 1942.  Some felt it was the first US victory of sort that caused a turning point in the war.

Machine gun section opened up to see it better. I forget the caliber but it has a very high firing rate per minute.
the Fat Man atomic bomb same as dropped on Japan to end the war.
Getting some flight time in an A-10. My Hokie attire may not qualify as suited up though.
Massive B-52 bomber.
Stealthy bomber

The infamous MOAB (commonly known as the Mother Of All Bombs). This is a 22,000 pound air blast bomb. That should get the bad guys attention for sure.
A Rambo sized Browning rifle.
View of a bomber inside the museum.  I liked this vantage point with the flag in the background.
Back home for some relaxing time before sunset happy hour.

Take care and God Bless.  Sign up for the email updates and leave a comment if you wish.
